The flag of Cyprus consists of white with a copper-coloured silhouette of the island. The island derived the name Cyprus from the Greek word for copper. Below the 'map of the island,' lay two green, crossed olive branches in the centre of the flag. The olive branches are a known symbol of peace. It is said that the olive branches represent the hope for peace and reconciliation between the Greek and Turkish communities. Cyprus joined the European Union on May 1st, 2004 as part of the European Union’s most recent and largest enlargement to 25 Member States. The background is a copper-yellow colour, symbolizing the large deposits of copper ore in Cyprus. This copper ore is mainly in the form of chalcopyrite, which is yellow in colour.
